Jake in NYC

March 22, Thursday

After 3 days of packing, prep work and occasionally hyperventilating, I’ve arrived in New York City. I’m immediately slapped by the sheer quantity of people at JFK airport and I’m buzzing from the inside out. As he familiar sea of yellow cabs deluge me I feel as if I.’ve wedged my finger in a light socket. My god, I’M HOME! My apartment is in Chelsea, overlooking the Hudson River and Gehry’s new Barry Diller/IAC office building. After picking up the promotional supplies that were mailed to a friend’s house by Raging Stallion and Naked Sword, I get in bed around 4AM. I can still hear people on the street. I love it. I love NYC.

March 23, Friday

My phone has already started to ring like mad. People wanting massages, friends looking to catch up, and the promoters I’m working with making sure that I’ve made it. I’m in town for 10 days, and I’ve got something planned every day.  I just keep telling myself that I can do this. And it’s gonna be so much fun.

Before moving to San Francisco 8 months ago, I’d lived in New York for 18 years.  There’s been a lot of pieces in those years. I was a club kid back in 1989. I was 17 years old and I moved to New York to hang out with guys like Michael Alig (pre-murder). My whole club schtick at the time was gender-fuck. Drag with the possibility of still getting laid. 17 year olds in New York City can get sex pretty easily. Even if they are wearing a corset and a silver cowboy hat.

First things first, I get to the gym. Good old David Barton Gym. It’s funny how a few months away from something will change your point of view. There were many times I hated this place. Familiarity and contempt I guess. Today I’m more than happy to be here with every one of these bitches. That’s one of the great things about New York is that history between people is easily forgotten. There’s just too much going on to bother holding a grudge.

I head to the Roseland Ballroom at 7PM for rehearsals and fitting for the Black Party, which is on Saturday night. The costumes are stuff from Nasty Pig, and the set is pretty wild. It’s a 4-story scaffold over the dance floor that we will have to climb up onto. I realize I’ll have to stay sober until the end. Francis the Greek keeps us on our toes through the process. The idea is simple: there are 4 white screens with shadow on one side and the show on another.

The concept is pretty cool, it’s called “Holy War”, a mash of war, religious iconography, American commercialism, violence and of course, sex.

I’ve heard there is of course a scandal about the theme of the show, but there always is. Last year Buck Angel showed New York what kind of man he is, and here is a vintage poster from the Black Party (c.1985) that you can make up your own mind about:

I say if the Black Party “theme” ever upsets you, you’ve probably outgrown it and shouldn’t be there.

Later I head out to Eastern Bloc, and got my freak on for an hour on their go-go box and pole. I hang out with Ben the super sexy bartender for a few minutes (unbelievably sexy guy). Darren, the owner lets me know Raging Stallion exclusive Dirk Jager is coming into town, and they are boyfriends. The world just gets smaller every day. Then I head to the Eagle to meet up with Max Scott, a promoter and one of my favorite people in NYC. It’s been a long day, I’m down at 5AM.

March 24, Saturday:

Today is the biggest day of the trip. First I head over the Splash to make sure Aaron Tanner has all the banners and “Instinct” posters to hang in the bar. I stick around to help him before heading to the Gay and Lesbian Expo to help Marx Scott with his promotion of V2 Vodka. The NYC Expo is huge, and every gay friendly company in America is there. I spent the next few hours handing out vodka and Naked Sword stuff. Everyone sure loves those blue Naked Sword T-shirts. This caffeinated vodka is starting to leave me a little weak in the knees and I’m glad when my shift is up:

Next I’m off the Splash bar. The place is packed, and there’s several groups going at once. Unfortunately I was unable to do a strip show because Splash is having some legal trouble so I have to settle for showing a little of my latest video “Instinct” and doing a signing.

Next, I rushed to The Black Party. I knew it was going to be a fun night, but man I was nervous. The costumes where very hot, Nasty Pig motorcycle pants, with the ass cut out,  paintball masks covered in corporate logos,  machine guns and a few things I brought on my own. There were four 20 minute segments we ran through, and beyond the marks we needed to hit everything was up for grabs. Here’s the set:

What goes on at the Black Party stays there, but there are a couple of highlights I can tell you about. Last year a film crew captured Back Angel and Tober Brandt among others and cut the Black Party a “movie you can dance to”. It’s called “Schwarzmald” and it was being released this year at the party. Buck Angel is one of my favorite people in the porn world. I’m so happy he is hitting, because that is one hard working FTM transsexual! While we where working the party they were filming a sequel. Titan Man Dean Flynn shot several interstitial pieces with me (such a beautiful guy), running through the club and attacking innocent club goers with plastic machine guns with a huge film crew following us.

After my shifts were over I hung out and danced for awhile before heading home . I have a whole next part of this trip and god I need the rest.

Sunday, March 25

After the Black Party I got an hour nap before heading to rehearsal for the next big event, Alegria XXX-treme. This is one of the best parties in the country, and the Black Party weekend edition is supposed to be amazing. Ray Dragon, a buddy of mine, asked me to be in the show this year. It was all very hush hush, but when I arrive, Matt Rush and Carlos Morales are there (woof!) and I get an idea of where this is going…

I went home, got a full 8 hours of sleep and headed back to the club.

The show was FUCKING OVER THE TOP! The live acts took place in 3 boxes at the head of the dance floor. Each segment was more and more ramped up until it was an all out fuckfest onstage. There are no pictures because security was very tight, but here’s something so you can see what I’m talking about: No, there is nothing quite like being naked, full boner on a stage in front of thousands of people. Especially if several of them are friends, or people you have grown up with over the years. And they were going fucking wild!. It’s the thing I’ve been looking for and here it was! Ric Sena and Ray Dragon made the whole experience so great. The concept and execution was perfect. They treated us like stars, and we all had a blast with the crowd and each other. It was the high point of my porn-time. I stayed after the show and danced my fucking ass off with DJ Abel at the helm. The best.

Monday, March 26

I wake up at 8 PM in just enough time to head the my next appearance at Max Scott’s Woof! This is a small Monday event that always draws a hardcore crowd and gets big press in NYC, kind of like an east coast “Cocktails with The Stars”. I love hanging out with Max, and he takes such good care of his guys. Danny Mann and I do a show:

Finally a day off. I spend it in NYC with my partner. I can finally turn “Deckard” off for a minute.

Had a photo shoot with Michael Alago this afternoon. Michael is from old-school New York, back in the days of CBGB, Debbie Harry, New York Dolls, Keith Haring, Basqiat, you get the point. He discovered Metallica and Rob Zombie among others as A&R. Now he’s a photographer and he’s done some of my favorite pictures and is always fun to hang out with. He is working on the next book, after his great success with the last book, “Roughgods”. I’m glad he’s asked me to be part of it. Here’s one of Alago’s prints of me:

Next it’s Will Clarks Porn Bingo with Jay Black. Together we raised $600 for the “Fresh Fruit Foundation”, one the highest takes from what I understand. Thanks to everyone that showed up and bought bingo cards!

Went on the “Derek and Romaine Show” on Sirius radio tonight. Just Derek was there though.  Had a good time. Doing these kind of things is strange, because as the guest you are “on” but the people doing the show are just at the office, like they are every day. It’s a similar feeling to being on the porn set. Any kind of show business is bizarre this way, it’s a real high, but just a little thought on the matter reveals the artifice underneath. You may be recognized on the street, but so much of that is dependent on the “behind the scenes” machinery that put you there. Your “talent” only gets you so far in this world.

Tonight was my last show at The Eagle. It’s another party thrown by Max Scott, and tonight it’s Eric Hunter, Shane Alexander and I. The first thing we did was lure people into a cage and flog them for charity. I got yelled at a couple of times by bar security for getting too frisky, but you try smacking a rock hard 24 year old and keep yourself under control.

Later I get to do a strip, I used “More Human than Human” from White Zombie. It’s a song about the movie “Blade Runner”. For those of you that don’t know this, the name Deckard is from the protagonist in “Blade Runner”, Rick Deckard. It’s one of my favorite movies. My favorite line: “I WANT MORE LIFE FUCKER!”.

Later on just as I was leaving someone asked me to smack him in the balls. I proceeded to smack, punch and kick him in the groin for a good 15 minutes, he stayed rock hard to whole time. Big old dick too! Fucking hot. I leave horny.

My last day in NYC started early. Back to the Eagle to shoot with Joe Oppedisano. I brought my whole bag of tricks for this shoot. Joe and I go back a few years when to when he just starting to photograph, after being a fashion stylist for years. Now, the thing I love about Joe is how laid back he is. You would never think he came from the fashion world; he’s just a furry ball of friendly sexy man. I wish all men were like this. Here’s something from that shoot:

Later my partner Mark and I had a really nice meal at Cookshop, my favorite restaurant, and cupcakes at Billy’s Cupcakes. It’s been a great trip. I’m looking forward to getting back to San Francisco. My new home. I’ll be back soon though.
